Sofia is an artist based in Richmond, VA Through song, painting and fiber, Sofia tells stories of grief, change and resistance. Her practice speaks to the inner emotional work needed to enact change within ourselves and our communities.

In her visual work, she paints intuitively, allowing space for contemplation and rest. Layers emerge through pouring, scraping, covering up, and dripping. Watered down paint moves on its own, inviting chance. She applies and integrates pastels with sweeping arm movements across the canvas to connect somatically to the piece. Abstract forms emerge, reflecting an inner network of neurons and emotions. Her use of second-hand fiber reflects the importance of textiles during the Queer Liberation Movement, and women of her own lineage. Most completed canvas work is kept in its most natural state: unstretched, to challenge the view of art as a commodity and to minimize environmental impact.
